So Far

Andrew Bird

Coming across my 2008 Rewind feature in the December 18th, 2008 issue of Boulder Weekly, I got to thinking about my favorite releases of 2009 thus far, as the year is about halfway gone.

Only Andrew Bird’s Noble Beast (the “deluxe” edition with an entire second disc of incredible instrumental music) an Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion (their most accessible album to date, but still one of their most brilliant) truly blew me away from start to finish and continue to do so.

But there have been a lot of great records released this year — and if Ego vs. Id ever actually gets around to finishing their first full-length, which they’ve been working on since the dawn of time, I might be able to add some dirty rock to this list. It’ll be interesting to see how it changes in the next six months.

Anyway, here are my favorite releases of 2009 thus far, in alphabetical order:

Alela Diane – To Be Still

Andrew Bird – Noble Beast
 (Deluxe Edition)

Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion

Bon Iver – Blood Bank EP

Elvis Perkins in Dearland — Elvis Perkins in Dearland

Phosphorescent – To Willie

Sonic Youth – The Eternal

John Vanderslice – Romanian Names

The Widow’s Bane – The Widow’s Bane

Wye Oak – The Knot
