This is my final semester as a writing & literature student at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, and my final thesis is on the lyrics of Bob Dylan from 1997 until his most recent album, Together Through Life. As I do an obscene amount of research for my thesis I’ll be posting interesting (and sometimes hilarious) nuggets of Dylan history, starting with this:
I just came across a video of Bob Dylan playing “Like A Rolling Stone” in 1996 at a venue that apparently had zero security and let fans walk onstage during the performance to shake Dylan’s hand, kiss him, hug him, and on and on. The funniest part of this video is watching Dylan try to scoot away from middle-aged women in “mom jeans” as he plays:
Hmmm. TOOM ’til now. Interesting set of lyrics. Wonder how you’ll deal with all the plagerism allegations. Up above, Dylan must have been in one of his manic phases.
I’m also dealing with the misogyny allegations, but mostly it’s just great to research write about Dylan’s unique transition from no original works 1990-1997 to the exciting chapter of his career that we’re still enjoying.
It’s a deep pool – it’s a sea, actually. Just rhyming “sons-a-bitches” with “orphanages” creates a wave that sweeps over most songwriters. Misogyny? Hmmm.
